The Neighbourhood Watch is the largest volunteer organisation in the Country and the Biddulph and District scheme has been recognised as one of the most successful in the County of Staffordshire.
An endorsement to this was the introduction of a Pro-Active Neighbourhood Watch team which was the first to be implemented in the Country and was introduced in May 2006 when ten dedicated volunteers agreed to supplement the activities of the PCSO’s and NBO’s in the Biddulph area.
The Pro-active team provide additional High Viz presence at occasions where extra vigilance and support is required by our local Police, such as the Christmas Light switch on, Continental Market, Armistice Parade and Fun days, together with assisting with Leaflet drops .
In recognition of their achievements, the team was awarded the 2010 Justices Award for Community Reassurance and in the same year, the Head of the team was awarded the Staffs County Neighbourhood Watch Award.
This was for the extra High Viz presence the team provide to the Community, either working directly with the Police in carrying out patrols and supplementing the PCSO’s, which back in 2006 was the reason the scheme was driven forward by Tony Worthington when we were told that the PCSO’s would not be replaced.
Thankfully that decision was rescinded and we now have a dedicated team of PCSO’s operating across the Moorlands area.
However, the Pro-Active Team is still very active and would like to recruit additional members to further supplement the existing role.
Anyone out there who would like to join the scheme must be enthusiastic, reasonably fit, prepared to undergo a CRB check and be a good communicator. All team members, after vetting, are issued with the appropriate High Viz equipment, the necessary ID card and protocol ( the do’s and don’ts) of the scheme, which included public liability insurance when involved in a particular activity. The main criteria being “ non -confrontational at all times” and being there as the eyes and ears of the Neighbourhood Watch and the Police.
If you are interested in joining this worthwhile scheme, then, in the first instance contact the Police or their representative PCSO Peter Johnson who will liaise with the Pro-active team leader.
