Scams - Alarm Systems |
High Pressure Sales of Alarm Systems
Staffordshire Trading Standards are warning residents to be aware of alarm companies operating in the ST19, WS11 and WS12 areas of the County. It is likely they are also operating in other areas of Staffordshire.
The company are selling alarm systems, usually for extremely low prices, in some cases as little as £1, without informing potential customers of high cost installation and maintenance charges which can run into thousands of pounds.
Reports have also been received of high pressure sales tactics being used to encourage residents to purchase the alarm. Trading Standards is urging residents not to purchase items over the doorstep. Do not give out personal information to doorstep callers, or sign documents which could turn out to be contracts. If you are interested in purchasing a similar alarm system, take time to consider and make sure you have all the facts, before making a decision. If you feel pressured or harassed by people calling at your door, you are advised to report this to the police.
Alarm Scam - Burglar and smoke detector
Trading Standards have received information about a company that is approaching the community through door to door sales, trying to sell battery powered all in one alarm systems which includes a burglar alarm and smoke detector. They claim that each detector is connected directly to the customer’s local fire and police station. This is not true.
The company uses persuasive language to make the consumer interested in buying this alarm. Once the customer is hooked into buying the alarm system they are signed into a 3 year contract which can amount up to £3000.
Alarm Scam - Biddulph
A couple of people in Biddulph have been contacted by a company stating they will install a house alarm into their property free of charge and it is courtesy of crimestoppers. Both were suspicious of the calls. Crimestoppers were contacted who confirmed that they are not running anything like this. Trading Standards have said that this is a scam tried in other areas to try to get into properties to put residents on contracts for lengthy terms that can cost up to £5,000. You are advised not to agree to any free alarm or follow up visit. Those wanting a household alarm should seek legitimate providers and obtain at least three estimates. Don't forget," if it sounds too good to be true it usually is!"
