Local residents have been contacted by telephone by someone claiming to be from a Government Scheme which enables people to claim back credit card charges. One consumer contacted didn’t have a credit card, but the caller was able to tell her who she banked with. She ended the call and upon reporting this to her bank, she was told this had happened to other customers.
Another consumer contacted was told she could reclaim money as her bank had increased her credit limit without her consent. The caller offered to resolve this for a fee of £395. Unfortunately, the consumer did give the caller her card details, but contacted her bank immediately after the call had ended and they were able to stop any payments being taken.
If you think the call may be genuine, contact your bank using the telephone number on your statement to verify the call before giving out any information.
If you think you may be entitled to claim back bank or credit card charges, you should contact your bank in the first instance.
If you think you may have been contacted by these scammers, please report it to Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
