Scams - BT Phone Bill |
Following BT’s warning to all consumers last year, we are again asking residents to be on their guard after reports were received of people receiving calls demanding money for unpaid phone bills.
They telephone their victim claiming to be from BT, and demand an unpaid bill be paid immediately, or they face having their telephone line disconnected. They ask for card or bank details in order to settle the account. If the victim queries or refuses to pay, the scammer then offers to prove they are from BT by disconnecting the line and asking the victim to try making another call.
This is done by a simple of trick. The scammer mutes their phone, but stays on the line. When the victim tries to make a call, they can’t, giving the impression the line has been disconnected. The scammer then calls their victim again and asks for the arrears to be paid in full.
BT have confirmed that although they will sometimes make telephone calls to customers about unpaid bills, they will never carry out disconnections over the phone. If you receive a call demanding money for unpaid bills, do not out give personal information or bank account details over the telephone. Contact the company concerned using the number on your bill to check the status of your account. Report calls of this nature to Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
